ASTM D5712
ASTM D5712 - Analysis of Protein in Natural Rubber and its products
This is an analytical test method to determine the amount of total aqueous extractable protein associated with natural rubber and its products. All protein labeled latex gloves must contain a maximum of 50 micrograms of protein per gram of glove when tested per ASTM D5712 by an accredited lab.
Protein level is important because exposure to latex proteins can make some people, with a genetic predisposition, sensitive to latex. By reducing exposure to latex proteins, people can reduce chances of becoming sensitized. People with a predisposition to latex sensitivity have an internal threshold set; if that threshold is never reached, they will never become symptomatic and can continue life as normal.
